Dear Clients and Friends,

You know how some people celebrate a birthday week; or even a birthday month? Well, we are taking that model and giving it a glow up with a year of birthday celebrations! It seems nearly impossible to follow up our February Bicentennial Auction; one at which almost 300 world records were set and $10M sold! At this behemoth of a sale, 40 of the World’s Greatest Producers offered over 200 Domaine-direct lots between them in celebration of Acker’s 200th Anniversary. Now we follow up that Bicentennial birthday bash with an auction on Saturday, March 7th at Marea which is host to another $5 million of the world’s finest and rarest wines. Let the 2020 revelry continue!

Highlights abound in this impressive auction, but one collection that stands above the rest is featured in Lots 317-670, a treasure trove of wines that has been around as long as I’ve been doing wine auctions. This collection has been around so long, that some of its wines even come from the iconic Andrew Lloyd Weber auction in 1997, making this a true “Phantom of the Auction.” Superstar wines roll through the pages like lyrics of songs from the pantheon of playwrighting. This collection stems from a passion for wine that has been handed down from father to son, and I’ve been familiar with this great family for over twenty years. At center stage, Bordeaux beauties shine like a case of magnums of 1989 Haut Brion, 1900 Chateau Margaux, a Jeroboam of 1929 Mouton, and a stretch run of Petrus, amidst numerous OWCs before a fabulous magnum of 1959 d’Yquem. Not to mention the numerous parcels of relatively younger wines. Then, a wonderful collection of DRC enters with seventy lots including ten of Echezeaux back to 1972, followed by ten of Grands Echezeaux from 1971 to 2006. The riches crescendo with fourteen lots of La Tache, crested by ten and twelve bottle OWCs of the 1985 and 1988. There’s a baker’s dozen lots of Richebourg including a bottle of 1947 and a full case of 1990. Romanee Conti itself takes center stage and unfurls with a splendid ten lots spanning 1990 to 2006. A few bottles of Jayer highlighted by 1991 Cros Parantoux enter the mix before some stunning whites from Drouhin, Leflaive, D’Auvenay and Raveneau join in. And then the godfather of Italian wines, Angelo Gaja, closes out the star-studded parade with Costa Russi back to 1990, the 99-point 1997 Sperss, along with parcels of bottles and magnums of the 1998, but not before a touch of California brings it home with mini verticals of Dalla Valle Maya and Dunn Howell Mountain. The younger wines were either purchased en Primeur or sometimes direct from the Domaines. All wines meticulously maintained and recently removed from a combination of climate-controlled home and professional storage.

The second featured collection of this sale, in Lots 671-791, comes from a repeat consignor who regularly brings us exquisite bottles of beautiful Burgundy and Bordeaux, and we welcome back this cache of “PrimeTime Bordeaux and Burgundy.” There is nothing quite like well-aged Bordeaux, and this collection has it in spades, with 1959 and 1982 Latour, 1982 La Mission Haut Brion and 1986 Lafite, either to cellar for decades more or to drink up! Rousseau is so hot right now and here we have 1985, 1988 and 1999 Chambertin (and 1988 Clos de Beze!). The king and queen of Burgundy duke it out with 1959 La Tache and 1988 Domaine Leroy Romanee St. Vivant. Coche-Dury comes in with a bang of 1986, 1992 and more vintages of Corton Charlemagne and Meursault Perrieres. A smattering of Champagne, Rhone, Italy and Spain take us home with stunners from Giacosa, Guigal, Krug, and Unico. Oh, plus two flights of Screaming Eagle – can’t forget them! I love pulling bottles from this cellar and it is a joy to have such a fun selection to share with you all once again!
