Hong Kong, SAR – January 21st, 2019 – All signs point towards a strong 2019 after Acker Merrall & Condit’s first Hong Kong auction of 2019 this past weekend. The firm secured over HK$48 million/US$6.2 in sales and set 128 New World Records, continuing the pace that ended 2018 with it once again the largest and leading wine auction firm in the world. With over 400 attendees across six cities, Acker and its clients together kicked off celebrations for “The Year of the Pig” throughout Asia. A series of exclusive consignment of seven of Burgundy’s most highly sought after Domaines and winemakers added to the celebratory atmosphere as nearly 80% of potential lots were New World Records in this segment alone. This first 2019 Hong Kong auction sets the stage for another Acker Burgundy celebration and its first New York auction of the year, its annual “Grande Fete de Bourgogne” on February 1st, which will also see seven more exclusive consignments direct from seven of Burgundy’s finest producers.
The Hong Kong’s auction’s Top Ten Lots were, to no one’s surprise, led by a collector’s dream list of wines. The Top Lot was a three-bottle banded OWC of the already legendary 2015 DRC Romanee Conti that sold for HK$644,800/US$83,200, followed by a rare twelve bottle OWC of 1990 Domaine Leroy Richebourg bought for HK$496,000/US$64,000 and two, three-bottle lots of the 2005 DRC Romanee Conti that were both purchased for HK$446,400/US$57,600. A three bottle OWC lot of the 2012 DRC Romanee Conti and a twelve bottle OWC lot of the 2002 d’Auvenay Bonnes Mares followed as each sold for HK$421,600/US$54,400. A 1993 DRC Assortment in OWC and the legendary 1982 Petrus in a twelve bottle OWC were both bought for HK$396,800/US$51,200. Closing out the Top Ten Lots of this great sale were two superb OWC lots, a six-pack of 2000 DRC Montrachet and a second twelve bottle lot of the 1982 Petrus, each selling for HK$372,000/US$48,000.
In addition to the Top Lots, collectors clamored to own lots from a series of consignments featuring seven superb Domaines in Burgundy, understanding the unique opportunity they presented to own perfectly stored treasures from these storied producers. The forty New World Records within these lots accounted for almost 80% of the non-mixed lot total, an impressive amount. Wines from Hubert Lignier, Bizot, Fourrier, Clos de la Chapelle, Hudelot-Noellat, Lamarche and Roulot excited collectors into a frenzy for their lots, with the majority personally in attendance, including three generations of the legendary Hubert Lignier.
“Pre-Chinese New Year is always a special time in Hong Kong and China, and we went all out accordingly. To have such an amazing turnout – over 400 people in six cities – is a testament to the continued strength and demand in the Chinese market. The Year of the Pig is coming, and buyers continued to pig out on the fine wine buffet on offer,” joked Acker Merrall and Condit Companies Chairman John Kapon. “In less than two weeks we will be at it again, with a weeklong celebration of Burgundy and first auction of the year in New York. Our Grande Fete de Bourgogne starting January 28th is a destination week for Burgundy lovers all across America. The auction will feature Domaine-direct consignments from seven producers in Burgundy including Comte Liger-Belair, Meo-Camuzet, Fourrier, de Montille, Duroche, Henri Gouges and Clos de la Chapelle, surrounded by one of the greatest series of Featured Burgundy Collections that we have ever offered.”
Acker’s annual Grande Fete de Bourgogne is an exciting, weeklong tribute to the wines of Burgundy, this year launching on Monday, January 28th and continuing through the Grande Fete auction itself on Friday, February 1st at Vaucluse. Unbelievable dinners and tastings unfold throughout the week, among them dinners featuring twenty vintages of Coche-Dury Meursault Perrieres, and thirty-five of Roumier Bonnes Mares.
